When we talk about why Stefan is the one Elena should be with, we always make a point about him respecting her and her choices and things similar to that.
And while that is important, and not everyone can provide another person with such sense of belonging to another person whilst being completely and utterly free, no one ever talks about the little things.
Things so simple, yet so beautiful, that upon realizing them, they leave you in awe because of their intensity.
Like how he opens doors for her. Makes her tea. Cooks her dinner. Brings her flowers. Shares his books with her. How he, even after she became a vampire, perfectly capable of defending herself, pushes her behind him when danger is near. He kisses her forehead whenever she’s worried or sad, before pulling her into one of those bear hugs. How he puts his hand on the small of her back to pull her closer to him whenever she comes to greet him.
Those are not big gestures. He does not make her some exotic teas, but probably her favorite, learning something new about her. And he cooks her things he knows by memory, giving her a piece of himself. And he doesn’t send her dozen of roses, he brings her simple flowers.
Simple. That’s why it’s so beautiful.
Because in their lives, nothing is ever simple. Ordinary. And neither is their relationship. And then there are those moments, and you find yourself smiling to the things normal couples do everyday. Because they do it too. Because, despite everything, you allow yourself to think, maybe they could make it work.
And it’s frightening how most ordinary and simple things can leave such an effect on you once you see them through different eyes.
